"The Cossacks" is a short novel by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1863. It is believed to be somewhat autobiographical, drawing from Tolstoy's experiences in the Caucasus during the Caucasian War. The story follows Dmitry Andreich Olenin, a nobleman who joins the army to escape the superficiality of his privileged life. The plot revolves around Olenin's struggle to reconcile his desires and ideals. "The Cossacks" is considered Tolstoy's first masterpiece and has been adapted into films and music.
